Extracts of seaweed in cosmetics

What are seaweed extracts?

Sea algae extracts are natural ingredients obtained from various species of algae growing in the seas and oceans. Algae are rich in vitamins A, C, E, B12, amino acids, microelements (such as magnesium, iodine, calcium) and Omega-3 fatty acids, which makes them extremely valuable in cosmetics. Due to their wide spectrum of action, seaweed extracts are widely used in care cosmetics and in anti-aging cosmetics.

The action and properties of seaweed extracts in cosmetics:

  • Hydration of the skin – seaweed, especially brown and red algae, are an excellent source of polysaccharides that have a moisturizing effect, helping to retain moisture in the skin and improving its elasticity.
  • Antioxidants – algae contain strong antioxidants (e.g. vitamin C, E, fucoxanthin), which neutralize the action of free radicals, delaying the aging processes of the skin.
  • Protection against contamination – extracts from seaweed create a protective barrier on the skin, protecting it from the harmful effects of air pollution and toxins.
  • Detoxifying properties – algae help cleanse the skin of toxins, supporting regenerative processes and improving the appearance of the skin.
  • Supporting the production of collagen – seaweed stimulate collagen synthesis, which helps keep the skin firm and elastic.
  • Relieving irritation – algae extracts have a soothing effect, reduce redness and irritation, ideal for sensitive skin.
  • Protection against UV radiation – some algae, especially Blood algae and Brown, help protect the skin from UV damage, preventing photoaging.

Benefits of seaweed extracts in cosmetics:

  • Intensive moisturizing – perfect for dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin.
  • Slowing down aging processes – thanks to strong antioxidant properties, algae help fight against the signs of skin aging.
  • Improvement of skin elasticity – algae extracts support the production of collagen, which makes the skin more elastic.
  • Skin detoxification – algae help cleanse the skin of toxins, supporting regeneration.
  • Protection against environmental pollution – effectively protect against the harmful effects of air pollutants.
  • Reduction of irritation and redness – ideal for sensitive skin, prone to irritation.

Types of algae used in cosmetics:

  • Brown algae (e.g. fucus vesiculosus) – rich in iodine, vitamins and minerals, known for their nutritional and moisturizing properties.
  • Red algae (e.g. corallina officinalis) – rich in minerals, used in detoxifying and anti-inflammatory products.
  • Green algae (e.g. chlorella) – have a cleansing effect and support skin regeneration.
  • Blood algae (e.g. porphyra) – help protect against UV radiation.
