AHA and BHA acids in cosmetics

AHA (alpha-hydroxy acids) and BHA (beta-hydroxy-acids) are popular ingredients used in cosmetics to exfoliate, brighten and improve skin condition.

They help in the fight against imperfections, discoloration and signs of aging.

AHA (Alpha-Hydroxy Acids)

AHAs are water-soluble and act mainly on the surface of the skin, exfoliating dead cells and improving its texture. They are recommended for people with dry, gray and lacking skin.

The most popular AHAs:

  • Glycolic acid – most effective, intensively exfoliates and stimulates cell renewal
  • Lactic acid – gentler, moisturizes and smoothes the skin
  • Almond acid – mild, ideal for sensitive and acne-prone skin
  • Malic and tartary acid – support the action of other acids

The action of AHA acids:

  • Remove dead skin cells
  • They lighten the discoloration
  • Moisturizes and smoothes the skin
  • Fine wrinkles are smoothed

BHA (Beta-Hydroxy Acids)

BHA acids are fat-soluble, so they penetrate into the pores, cleansing them and regulating sebum secretion. They are ideal for oily, acne-prone and blackhead-prone skin.

The most popular BHA acid:

  • Salicylic acid – has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and regulates the work of sebaceous glands

The action of BHA acids:

  • Cleanse pores and reduce blackheads
  • They are anti-inflammatory and antibacterial
  • Regulate the secretion of sebum
  • Reduces acne and imperfections

How to use AHA and BHA?

  • Apply best in the evening, starting with low concentrations
  • During the treatment, it is necessary to use sunscreen (SPF 50)
  • Do not combine with retinol and other strong substances at the beginning of treatment
